Delhi Metro Dust Complaints Drop Sharply in 2026 Amid Stronger Pollution Controls

DMRC credits strict monitoring, anti-smog measures and faster grievance redressal for major decline

New Delhi: Dust pollution complaints linked to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) sites have seen a dramatic fall in early 2026, dropping from 640 complaints during the same period last year to just 24, according to official data.

The sharp decline between January 1 and April 20 signals a significant improvement in pollution control across metro construction zones and station premises. Officials attribute this to stricter compliance, enhanced monitoring, and a streamlined complaint redressal system.

Dust-related grievances had been rising steadily in previous years as metro expansion picked up pace—reaching 945 in 2022, 1,378 in 2023, and peaking at 2,180 in 2024. The trend began reversing in 2025, with total complaints dropping to 764.

To curb dust pollution, DMRC ramped up inspections and enforcement. While 418 inspections were carried out in the first four months of 2025, the number dropped to 307 in the same period this year, indicating better adherence to norms at construction sites.

Key anti-pollution measures include deployment of 82 anti-smog guns and 19 water tankers at project sites. Additionally, 30 anti-smog guns have been installed on rooftops, and mist spray systems are operational at 131 metro stations to control airborne dust.

The corporation is also implementing the Delhi government’s 14-point dust control framework and has introduced green initiatives alongside construction work. These include diverting groundwater from underground station sites to rejuvenate Roshanara Bagh Lake and developing dense urban forests using the Miyawaki plantation method near metro depots.

Officials said there are currently no pending complaints on platforms like the Green Delhi App or DMRC’s social media channels, while complaints on civic apps remain minimal.

The improvements highlight efforts to balance rapid infrastructure expansion with environmental responsibility in the national capital.
