Venice- Hollywood actor and filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal has been appointed as the president of the main competition jury for the 83rd edition of the Venice International Film Festival. The announcement was made by festival organisers, confirming her leadership role at one of the world’s most respected cinema events.
Gyllenhaal, who has gained significant recognition behind the camera in recent years, earned widespread praise for her directorial ventures, including The Bride! and her debut feature The Lost Daughter. The latter, adapted from a novel by Elena Ferrante, premiered at Venice in 2021 and secured the award for best screenplay, further establishing her credibility as a filmmaker.
Festival director Alberto Barbera highlighted her artistic journey, describing it as thoughtful and bold. He emphasised that her perspective would bring depth and independence to the jury’s deliberations. As jury president, Gyllenhaal will oversee the panel responsible for evaluating competing films and awarding top honours, including the coveted Golden Lion.
The Venice jury traditionally includes prominent figures from the global film industry, who collectively assess entries from across the world. The 2026 panel is expected to feature a diverse mix of filmmakers and artists, though the full lineup is yet to be revealed.
At last year’s festival, filmmaker Alexander Payne headed the jury that awarded the top prize to a film by Jim Jarmusch. The event continues to be a key platform for international cinema, often spotlighting distinctive storytelling and emerging creative voices.
Responding to her appointment, Gyllenhaal expressed gratitude and excitement about contributing to the festival’s legacy. She noted that Venice has consistently championed unique and authentic storytelling, and she looks forward to engaging with films through a lens of appreciation and curiosity rather than judgment.
