Palghar: Two people were killed and four others suffered serious injuries after an explosion tore through a firecracker manufacturing unit in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on Tuesday, prompting an investigation into possible safety violations and operational irregularities.
The blast occurred at a unit operating from a tin-shed structure in Konsai village in Wada taluka, where dozens of workers were reportedly engaged in firecracker production when the explosion took place.
Officials said the explosion is believed to have occurred during a chemical mixing process, triggering a powerful blast that caused severe destruction at the site and led to the collapse of the structure.
One worker died at the scene, while another succumbed to critical burn injuries during treatment. Four others injured in the explosion were shifted to medical facilities for advanced care.
Emergency teams, including police and fire services, responded to the site and brought the resulting blaze under control while carrying out rescue operations.
Authorities said preliminary findings indicate raw materials had been sourced externally and the unit had only recently begun operations. Investigators are now examining whether the facility had the required permissions to operate and whether mandated safety measures were followed.
Police are also searching for the owners of the unit as part of the ongoing probe into accountability and possible negligence.
The incident has renewed concerns over hazardous working conditions in firecracker manufacturing, coming shortly after another deadly blast at a similar facility in Tamil Nadu.
Officials said the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
