Thane Murder Case Breakthrough as Contract Killer Arrested in Jharkhand After 9 Years on the Run

Police track down main accused in 2017 murder-for-hire case months after co-accused were convicted by a Thane court

Maharashtra: Police have arrested a key accused in a 2017 murder case in Maharashtra’s Thane district, ending a nine-year manhunt that stretched across state lines.

The accused, identified as Rajesh alias Uttam Muneshwar Ravidas, was apprehended in Hazaribagh after investigators traced his whereabouts following fresh intelligence inputs.

Authorities allege Ravidas was the principal shooter in the killing of Shamu Lahiri Goud, who was shot dead in Mira village in April 2017.

Investigators said the murder was linked to a financial dispute. According to police, another accused allegedly hired Ravidas to eliminate Goud after repeated demands for repayment of a loan.

Police claim Ravidas travelled from Jharkhand to Maharashtra with accomplices, surveyed the target and carried out the attack using an illegal firearm.

While other accused in the case were tried and sentenced last month, Ravidas had remained untraceable for years. A police team eventually conducted surveillance in Hazaribagh before taking him into custody on April 15.

Officials also said the accused has previously been linked to another murder case in Jharkhand, where he was allegedly involved in a contract killing.

With the arrest, police say a major pending chapter in the long-running murder case has now moved closer to closure.
