Kerala: The death of a tribal man in Kerala’s Wayanad after allegedly consuming arishtam has triggered protests, prompted a police investigation and raised serious concerns over the possible misuse of traditional medicinal products as intoxicants.
The 38-year-old man, identified as a resident of a tribal hamlet in the district, died while undergoing treatment after reportedly developing severe health complications. His death has led to growing anger among local residents, who have alleged that a product sold as Ayurvedic medicine may have been misused and could have posed a threat to vulnerable communities.
Authorities are now investigating whether the arishtam consumed by the deceased contained intoxicating substances or was being sold in violation of regulations. Police said samples would be sent for laboratory testing as part of the probe, while statements from consumers and medical records have also been collected.
The incident sparked protests from residents and public representatives, leading to police intervention and the closure of a local outlet accused of selling the product without proper authorisation or medical oversight. Allegations have also surfaced that the establishment had been operating despite earlier complaints.
Locals have claimed the product was being widely used as an intoxicant, particularly among tribal populations, and alleged that people from nearby areas regularly purchased it, including on days when alcohol sales were restricted. These claims have intensified calls for stricter scrutiny of such outlets and stronger safeguards to prevent exploitation of vulnerable groups.
Hospital indications suggesting a possible combination of alcohol use and arishtam intake may have contributed to the death have added complexity to the case, though officials have said the exact cause remains subject to investigation.
The case has now broadened into a larger debate over regulation, public health oversight and the risks posed when traditional medicinal preparations are allegedly diverted for misuse. Residents have demanded stringent action against illegal sales and accountability for those responsible if violations are confirmed.
