A night of music turned tragic in Mumbai after two college students lost their lives following alleged drug consumption at a concert held at the NESCO Exhibition Centre. Police have arrested six individuals, including a suspected drug supplier, in connection with the case.
The victims, identified as students of Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, reportedly consumed Ecstasy pills during the event. A third student remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment at a city hospital.
Investigators have identified the alleged supplier as Anand Patel, who was arrested from Kalyan. According to police, he supplied the party drug, which was delivered to attendees at the venue through a logistics app.
Earlier, five others were taken into custody, including event-linked personnel and individuals associated with the victims. Authorities claim lapses in security checks at the venue allowed narcotics to be brought inside.
The students had attended a music concert with a larger group. During the event, they reportedly consumed a pill described as Ecstasy, a synthetic stimulant known for its mood-enhancing and hallucinogenic effects.
Soon after, two of them experienced severe discomfort, including breathing issues and dizziness, before collapsing. They were rushed to nearby hospitals but later succumbed. Another attendee developed similar symptoms and remains under medical supervision.
An FIR has been registered, and all six accused have been booked under provisions of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Police are now probing the supply chain of the drugs and attempting to identify the source. Officials have also flagged possible violations related to serving alcohol and inadequate frisking at the venue.
The incident has reignited concerns over drug consumption at large-scale music events. Experts warn that substances like MDMA (Ecstasy) can have unpredictable and dangerous effects, especially when mixed with alcohol or taken without awareness of dosage.
Authorities continue to investigate the case, with a focus on accountability of organisers and stricter enforcement of safety measures at public events.
