ECI Launches Pre-Election Assessment in Kerala, West Bengal Up Next

ECI Begins Poll Preparedness Review in Kerala, West Bengal Next Ahead of Assembly Elections

New Delhi, March 5, 2026: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has kicked off its review of poll readiness in Kerala ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, with West Bengal scheduled for a follow-up visit on the night of March 8. The two-day assessment in each state forms part of a broader series of pre-election inspections in states preparing to go to the polls later this year.

In Kerala, the Commission’s discussions will center on the accuracy and completeness of the electoral rolls, security arrangements, and overall administrative preparedness. Multiple rounds of meetings are planned for March 9 and 10 with district election officers, police officials, and other key state authorities. A particular focus will be on voter records currently under judicial scrutiny following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the rolls, which uncovered issues such as age discrepancies, irregular family linkages, and other documentation inconsistencies.

Senior ECI officials noted that the review will also examine law-and-order arrangements, sensitive area mapping, and the progress made in correcting and updating the electoral rolls. The Commission highlighted that West Bengal has reported a notably high number of cases under adjudication during its roll revision process, making the upcoming review in that state especially significant.

According to an ECI spokesperson, these on-site visits allow the poll panel to gauge ground-level preparedness, identify logistical or security challenges, and ensure that administrative systems are ready before the election schedule is formally announced. Once the assessments in Kerala and West Bengal are completed, the Commission will wrap up its ground-level review of all poll-bound states, paving the way to finalize the broader election roadmap and schedule.
