Filmmaker Karan Johar, who made his directorial comeback with ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ in 2023, has opened up about the film’s journey and the surprising impact of one particular subplot — the charming romance between veteran stars Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi.
As the film completes two years since release, Karan shared his thoughts in a conversation with The Times of India, touching upon the possibility of turning that senior romance into a full-fledged feature film.
While the spotlight largely remained on Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, the heartfelt kiss between Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi sparked major conversation across social media and film circles. Reacting to this unexpected reaction, Johar said:
“There is a beautiful love story between Dharmendra ji and Shabana ji’s characters that could easily stand on its own. Who knows, I might just make a separate movie on that someday.”
This revelation has stirred excitement among fans who adored the nostalgic and emotionally layered portrayal of mature love in the film.
Johar also spoke about how Rocky Aur Rani ranks among his most cherished films. He placed it alongside ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘My Name Is Khan’, two of his most celebrated directorial works. Reminiscing about his debut, he said:
“Kuch Kuch Hota Hai holds an emotional place for me. It saved our production house from a financial crisis and made my father smile again.”
Released in 2023, the film became a critical and commercial blockbuster, grossing over ₹357 crore globally. It stood out for its vibrant blend of romance, family drama, and social commentary — addressing themes like gender roles, cultural clashes, and generational gaps.
The storyline revolves around Rocky, a flamboyant Punjabi man, and Rani, an outspoken Bengali journalist, who decide to live with each other’s families before marriage to better understand their differences.
Karan is currently producing ‘Dhadak 2’, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, which is set to hit theatres on August 1. The film will clash at the box office with Ajay Devgn’s ‘Son of Sardaar 2’.
With increasing demand for fresh narratives and diverse love stories, Karan Johar’s possible new project exploring the mature relationship of Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi could break fresh ground in mainstream cinema. As fans await further updates, this idea already has the potential to become another emotional, star-studded hit.
