Bangladesh Train Services Restart Following 26-Hour Strike by Railway Staff

Bangladesh : Train services in Bangladesh have resumed today after the railway running staff called off their 26-hour strike, which had caused nationwide disruption. The strike was withdrawn following a meeting held yesterday between Railway Adviser Fouzul Kabir, leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and representatives from the railway running staff.

Mojibur Rahman, the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Railway Running Staff and Sramik Karmachari Union, announced this morning that the strike had ended after the meeting with Railway Adviser Kabir at his residence in Dhaka. The meeting resulted in an assurance from Kabir that the demands of the railway staff would be met, leading to the suspension of the strike and the restoration of train services.

The strike had started early yesterday morning, as the running staff demanded improved benefits, including pensions, gratuity, and increased mileage allowances. This move led to the suspension of all train services across the country, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The disruption caused significant inconvenience, as passengers were left without any alternatives for long-distance travel.

As a result of the strike, road transportation services also faced immense pressure. Bus operators and other forms of road transportation raised fares drastically to cope with the surge in demand. Passengers were forced to pay exorbitant rates, further adding to the frustration of the public. The sudden hike in transportation costs placed a financial burden on those who had no choice but to rely on road services for their commute.

The railway running staff had been pushing for better compensation and benefits, including pension schemes, gratuity, and a revised mileage allowance to reflect their work and commitment to the railway system. The strike highlighted the growing dissatisfaction within the railway sector, as the staff raised concerns about their working conditions and pay.

The resolution of the strike came as a relief to the public, especially for those who were facing travel difficulties and financial strain due to the fare hikes. The withdrawal of the strike was a significant step toward ensuring normalcy in the transportation system and addressing the concerns of the railway workers.

With the assurance from Railway Adviser Kabir, there is hope that the railway staff’s demands will be addressed, and the strained relations between the government and the workforce will improve. Authorities are expected to follow through on the promises made during the meeting, which could include the implementation of better pension schemes, gratuity, and mileage allowances for the railway staff.
