In a tragic incident in Uttarakhand, nine trekkers from Karnataka lost their lives near Sahastra Tal. The trekkers, part of a 22-member group, perished after losing their way due to adverse weather conditions while returning from Sahastra Tal on Tuesday. The Sahastra Tal trek is a challenging high-altitude trail located at 15,000 feet in the Garhwal region.
A joint air-ground search and rescue operation by the Indian Air Force (IAF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) successfully rescued 13 trekkers. The challenging terrain and severe weather complicated the rescue efforts.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his sorrow over the deaths and directed Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, who is currently in Dehradun, to ensure the safe return of all the rescued trekkers to Karnataka. He assured that the government is exerting all efforts and going beyond capacity to facilitate the trekkers’ return and provide necessary support to the affected families.
