New Delhi : Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Indian armed forces successfully intercepted and destroyed a Pakistani short-range ballistic missile, the Abdali (Hatf-2), over Jaisalmer in Rajasthan late Friday night. The interception, which occurred during the night of May 9–10, demonstrated the strength and preparedness of India’s air defence systems in the face of complex aerial threats.
The Abdali missile, with an operational range of approximately 450 kilometres, was developed by Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). It represents an evolution of the earlier Hatf-1 missile and is equipped with improved guidance systems designed to enhance precision. The missile is reportedly capable of delivering both conventional and, as claimed by Pakistan, nuclear warheads. However, defence analysts suggest that in this instance, it was likely armed with conventional explosives aimed at military or logistical targets.
Indian defence officials confirmed that the missile was detected promptly and neutralized before it could reach Indian territory. The swift interception came amid a broader wave of provocations that included drone intrusions across 26 Indian locations earlier in the evening. These incidents appear to be part of a coordinated attempt by Pakistan to test India’s defences and project military assertiveness.
“The launch of the Abdali missile is a clear provocation,” a senior Indian military official stated. “However, our response was guided by strategic restraint and operational efficiency. The missile was intercepted in mid-air without any damage to civilian or military assets.”
This calculated response underscores India’s commitment to maintaining stability while remaining vigilant and fully capable of neutralizing threats. India’s robust missile defence architecture—developed over years through systems like the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) and Prithvi Air Defence (PAD)—has once again proven its operational readiness.
Experts view the Pakistani launch of the Abdali as a signal rather than a full-scale strike. It reflects Islamabad’s intent to demonstrate deterrence capabilities amid deteriorating diplomatic ties. However, India’s measured and technologically precise response reflects a doctrine grounded in restraint, deterrence, and strategic clarity.
As the region watches closely, global powers have urged both sides to avoid further escalation. Yet, India’s successful interception sends a strong message: it will not be provoked into conflict but will decisively defend its sovereignty against any aggression.
