Sanjay Roy’s Sentence in RG Kar Rape Case Coming Up, Court Allows His Statement First

Kolkata : A CBI court in Kolkata, West Bengal, is set to pronounce the quantum of punishment for Sanjay Roy on Monday afternoon. Roy has been convicted of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old duty doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city. The incident occurred on August 9, 2023, and shook the medical community and the city of Kolkata.

The sentencing will take place at the Sealdah court, which has been fortified with high security. Nearly 500 policemen have been deployed around the court to prevent any untoward incidents. Sanjay Roy, who was taken from jail to court around 10:30 am on Monday, is expected to be sentenced after hearing his statement.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, when asked about her views on the sentence, declined to comment on the specific quantum of punishment but expressed her earlier demand for the death penalty. She noted, “I had earlier demanded the death penalty, but it depends on the judge and how the case has been framed.” Banerjee’s remark highlights the political sensitivity surrounding the case and the public outcry for justice in a crime that has left the medical community in shock.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das, who presided over the trial, convicted Roy on Saturday, finding him guilty of raping and murdering the postgraduate trainee doctor. The verdict came after months of legal proceedings, with the prosecution presenting strong evidence of Roy’s involvement in the crime. The details of the crime were particularly horrifying, and the victim’s family and colleagues have called for the harshest possible punishment.

Roy’s actions have sparked a wave of outrage across the state, and the sentencing is expected to draw widespread attention. As legal experts await the court’s decision, the case has also reignited discussions about the safety of healthcare workers, particularly women, in public hospitals.
