Rain Relief in sight for Andhra Pradesh, Telangana as death toll rises to 35

Hyderabad, Sept 3 2024 : The intense rainfall and flooding that have battered Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over the past few days have claimed at least 35 lives, prompting both states to request the Centre to declare the situation a national calamity. As the death toll rises, relief efforts are intensifying, with over 47,000 people relocated to relief camps across the two states. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy have both appealed to the central government for immediate assistance, citing the extensive damage caused by the floods. Naidu described the flooding, particularly in Vijayawada, as the “biggest disaster” he has witnessed in the state. Reddy, meanwhile, reported damages exceeding Rs 5,000 crore in Telangana and requested an initial relief package of Rs 2,000 crore.

In Andhra Pradesh, 19 people have lost their lives due to various rain-related incidents, while 16 deaths have been reported in Telangana. The heavy rains have resulted in widespread flooding, leading to severe waterlogging in several areas. In Vijayawada, the Prakasam Barrage saw its highest floodwater discharge on Monday, releasing 11.43 lakh cusecs of water, which led to the inundation of Bhavanipuram road, Swathi Theatre area, and Vambay colony. By Tuesday, the discharge had slightly reduced to 9.64 lakh cusecs, allowing some floodwater to recede in the city.  The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has provided a glimmer of hope, forecasting a reduction in the intensity of the rainfall as the depression over East Vidarbha and Telangana is expected to move northwestwards, weakening into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours. However, a yellow warning has been issued for 10 districts in Telangana on Tuesday, including Adilabad, Mancherial, Khammam, Suryapet, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Mahabubabad, indicating that heavy rains may still occur in these regions.

Both states have mobilized significant resources for rescue and relief operations. In Andhra Pradesh, 47 rescue teams, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have been deployed. The government distributed food packets to over 3.5 lakh people on Monday as part of its relief efforts. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in the floods. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured both Chief Ministers of the Centre’s full support, following discussions with them on Sunday to assess the situation and coordinate relief measures.

As the rain fury begins to ease, both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are focusing on recovery and rebuilding efforts, while continuing to monitor the situation closely to prevent further loss of life and property.
