Kolkata August 14 2024 : The ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a 31-year-old female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has taken a new turn, sparking political controversy. The Kolkata Police have arrested a civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, in connection with the brutal crime, but recent developments at the crime scene have raised concerns.
The controversy centers around renovation work near the seminar room where the victim’s body was discovered. Left-wing groups, including the CPI(M)-affiliated Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Students’ Federation of India (SFI), have accused the hospital authorities of attempting to tamper with evidence. The groups allege that the demolition of a room and a nearby women’s toilet, located just a few feet from the crime scene, is an attempt to destroy crucial evidence.
Protesters, including members of the DYFI, gathered at the hospital’s Emergency building gate, demanding accountability. Dr. Subarna Goswami, from the Left-affiliated Joint Forum of Doctors, claimed that the postmortem report suggests the victim was gangraped, raising questions about whether more individuals were involved in the crime.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case following an order from the Calcutta High Court. The CBI arrived in Kolkata with a specialized medical and forensic team to begin their investigation. The court has also directed the Kolkata Police to hand over all relevant documents to the CBI immediately.
Amidst the ongoing investigation, political tensions have escalated. Amit Malviya, head of the BJP’s IT cell, accused the state government of attempting to cover up the crime. He alleged that the demolition work is part of a broader effort to protect influential individuals linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, echoed these concerns, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also serves as the state’s Home Minister. Adhikari accused the TMC government of tampering with evidence and obstructing the investigation.
The case has also prompted nationwide protests, with doctors and medical students at AIIMS Delhi staging a demonstration in solidarity with the victim. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) called for a nationwide shutdown of outpatient services on Tuesday to protest the incident.
