Centre for Trade and Investment Law Celebrates Seventh Anniversary

New Delhi, August 6, 2024: The Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL) at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi, celebrated its seventh anniversary at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The event featured the release of the Special Issue of the Global Trade and Customs Journal (GTCJ) and the Seventh Anniversary Magazine on “India’s G20 Presidency.”

Distinguished guests included G20 Sherpa Shri Amitabh Kant, Commerce Secretary Shri Sunil Barthwal, Additional Secretary Shri L. Satya Srinivas, and IIFT Vice Chancellor Shri Rakesh Mohan Joshi.

CTIL, established in 2016 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, serves as a government think tank and advisory body, focusing on international trade and investment law. Since its inception, CTIL has provided over 2,500 advisory opinions to the Government of India, particularly on WTO law and bilateral trade agreements.

In his keynote address, Shri Amitabh Kant highlighted the importance of the G20 as a forum for major economies to address critical issues like international financial stability, climate change, and sustainable development. He emphasized the inclusion of the African Union during India’s G20 Presidency, aiming to make global growth more inclusive.

Shri Kant noted the G20’s consensus-based system, mentioning the unanimous agreement on all 83 paragraphs in the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration. He praised CTIL’s multidisciplinary lawyers for their contributions to the Department of Commerce.

Commerce Secretary Shri Sunil Barthwal underscored the relevance of the Global South and the need to integrate the needs of developing and Least Developed Countries into the global trade system. He highlighted the upcoming Global South Summit and African Summit as platforms to address these concerns.

CTIL aims to create a dedicated pool of legal experts to enhance India’s participation in international trade and investment negotiations and dispute settlements, positioning itself as a thought leader in international economic law.
