Dergaon, Assam 15,March,2025: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam. The event was attended by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, and other dignitaries.
Lachit Barphukan Police Academy to Become Nation’s Best
In his address, Shri Amit Shah expressed confidence that the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy will become the top-ranked police academy in the country within the next five years. He praised Assam’s legendary warrior Lachit Barphukan for leading the state to victory against the Mughals and commended the Modi government for ensuring his legacy is recognized nationwide. He noted that Barphukan’s biography has now been translated into 23 languages and is available in libraries across India.
Shri Shah stated that the academy, built at a cost of ₹167 crore in its first phase, will receive a total investment of ₹1,050 crore across three phases. The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and has already trained 2,000 police personnel from Goa and Manipur.
Assam’s Path to Development Under Modi Government
Highlighting the progress in Assam, Shri Amit Shah emphasized the signing of key peace agreements, including:
- Bodoland Agreement (2020)
- Karbi Anglong Agreement (2021)
- Tribal Peace Agreement (2022)
- ULFA, Assam-Meghalaya, and Assam-Arunachal Agreements (2023)
These agreements have resulted in over 10,000 youth laying down arms and joining the mainstream. Shri Shah also announced plans for a ₹27,000 crore semiconductor industry in Assam, transforming the state’s economic landscape.
Massive Investments and Infrastructure Boost
The Modi government has facilitated infrastructure projects worth ₹8 lakh crore for Assam, including:
- ₹3 lakh crore for new projects
- ₹10,000 crore Bharat Mala Project (200 km long)
- ₹3,000 crore Dhubri-Phulwari Bridge
- ₹3,400 crore rural roads project (3,700 km)
- ₹1,000 crore embankment and road project in Majuli
- ₹1,100 crore expansion of Gopinath Bordoloi Airport
- ₹9,000 crore railway projects
- ₹1,000 crore AIIMS project
- Medical colleges in Tamulpur, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, and Dhubri
Welfare Initiatives for Assam’s Poor
Shri Shah also highlighted several welfare schemes implemented under the Modi government:
- 58 lakh homes connected with tap water
- 1.8 crore people received free medical treatment up to ₹5 lakh
- 43 lakh toilets built
- 2.32 crore people receiving free 5kg rice per month
- 51 lakh gas cylinders distributed
- 21 lakh houses provided under housing schemes
Strengthening Law & Order in Assam
Under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, Assam’s conviction rate has risen from 5% to 25%, ensuring a stronger judicial system. Shri Shah credited the three new criminal laws introduced by PM Narendra Modi for empowering the police to better protect citizens.
Assam to Witness Historic Growth
Shri Amit Shah concluded by stating that the Modi government and Assam government are working together to transform the state. The ₹5 lakh crore investment drive will create new job opportunities, ensuring a golden future for Assam’s youth.
