New Delhi : The Indian Army contingent, comprising 120 personnel, departed today for the 6th edition of the India-Japan Joint Military Exercise, DHARMA GUARDIAN. The exercise is scheduled to be conducted in the East Fuji Maneuver Training Area of Japan from February 24 to March 9.
The primary objective of the exercise is to enhance interoperability between the two forces while undertaking joint urban warfare and counter-terrorism operations under a UN mandate. The exercise will focus on achieving a high degree of physical fitness, joint planning, and joint tactical drills. By participating in this collaborative training, both nations aim to further strengthen their bilateral defence cooperation.
During the exercise, key aspects such as tactical drills, joint exercises, and disaster response strategies will be rehearsed. These activities are designed to enhance operational capabilities, refine combat skills, and strengthen interoperability for effective joint operations. The Indian Army contingent will be represented mainly by troops from a battalion of the MADRAS Regiment, along with personnel from other arms and services. The Japan Ground Self Defence Force (JGSDF) contingent, comprising a similar number of personnel, will be represented by the 34th Infantry Regiment.
Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN is an annual event conducted alternatively in India and Japan. The last edition of the exercise was held in Rajasthan, India, in 2024. The recurring nature of this joint military exercise underscores the commitment of both nations to bolster their defence partnership, promote regional security, and foster mutual understanding.
In addition to honing combat skills, the exercise will also include activities aimed at enhancing teamwork, communication, and leadership among the participating troops. Simulated scenarios involving complex urban environments and counter-terrorism operations will be conducted to provide realistic training experiences. This hands-on approach will enable soldiers from both nations to learn from each other’s operational methodologies and best practices.
Furthermore, the exercise will foster camaraderie and cultural exchange between the Indian Army and JGSDF personnel. Social and recreational activities will be organized to strengthen bonds and build long-lasting relationships. The emphasis on physical fitness, mental agility, and collaborative problem-solving will ensure that participants are well-prepared to tackle real-world challenges in joint military operations.
