Om Birla has been re-elected as Lok Sabha Speaker

Senior BJP MP Om Birla has been re-elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker through a voice vote. The opposition, which had nominated Congress MP K. Suresh for the position, did not push for a vote in the House. Following his election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju escorted Mr. Birla to the Speaker’s chair.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi, along with 12 other NDA leaders, moved the motion to elect Mr. Birla. Opposition leaders, including Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant, Supriya Sule of the NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Anand Bhadauria of the SP, moved the motion in favor of Mr. Suresh.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated Mr. Birla, highlighting the historic nature of his re-election and expressing optimism about his guidance over the next five years. Modi praised Mr. Birla’s previous tenure, noting significant legislation passed and record productivity of 97 percent in the Lok Sabha.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also extended his congratulations, emphasizing the House’s role as the voice of the people and assuring opposition support for the smooth functioning of the House. He stressed the importance of trust and allowing opposition voices to be heard.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav expressed confidence in the opposition receiving ample opportunity to voice their concerns, emphasizing the importance of impartiality from the Speaker.

TMC MP Sudhip Bandhopadhya addressed the suspension of opposition MPs in the previous Lok Sabha, advocating for thorough discussions before passing legislation.
