Ganga Dussehra 2026: Sacred Bathing, Charity and Worship Timings Announced for May 25

Devotees to Celebrate the Descent of Maa Ganga With Holy Rituals Across India

The auspicious festival of Ganga Dussehra will be observed on May 25, 2026, marking the divine descent of Maa Ganga from heaven to earth. Celebrated on the Dashami Tithi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha, the festival holds deep spiritual importance for Hindu devotees, especially in cities situated along the banks of the holy Ganga river.

On this sacred occasion, lakhs of devotees are expected to take a ritual dip in holy rivers, perform prayers, offer donations, and observe fasts seeking purification from sins and blessings for peace and prosperity.

According to Hindu beliefs, bathing in the Ganga on Ganga Dussehra helps wash away negative karmas and brings spiritual merit. Temples and ghats in places like Haridwar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Rishikesh witness massive gatherings during the celebration.

As per the Hindu Panchang, Dashami Tithi will commence in the early hours of May 25 and conclude on May 26. Since the Udaya Tithi falls on May 25, the festival will be celebrated on the same day.

  • Dashami Tithi Begins: 4:30 AM on May 25, 2026
  • Dashami Tithi Ends: 5:10 AM on May 26, 2026

Religious scholars consider Brahma Muhurat and Abhijit Muhurat highly favorable for spiritual activities on Ganga Dussehra.

Brahma Muhurat

  • 4:34 AM to 5:18 AM

Abhijit Muhurat

  • 12:09 PM to 1:02 PM

Devotees are advised to complete holy bathing, worship rituals, and charitable donations during these auspicious periods. Donations should ideally be made before sunset for maximum spiritual benefit.

The festival is closely associated with the legend of King Bhagirath, who performed intense penance to bring the holy Ganga to earth for the salvation of his ancestors. Pleased with his devotion, Goddess Ganga descended from heaven, which is why she is also lovingly called Bhagirathi.

Ganga Dussehra is celebrated with great devotion every year, symbolizing purity, faith, and liberation from sins
