Bengaluru, May 4: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has penned a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging swift action in providing support to the victims of alleged sexual assaults by Prajwal Revanna, Member of Parliament representing Hassan.
Expressing the moral responsibility of the Congress party to stand up for justice for women, Gandhi called for united efforts to hold the accused accountable. In the letter, Gandhi acknowledged the Karnataka Government’s formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the grave allegations against Prajwal.
Gandhi revealed that a request has been made to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to cancel Prajwal’s diplomatic passport and facilitate his extradition to India. He emphasized extending all possible support to the victims, stating, “They deserve our compassion and solidarity as they fight their battle for justice. We have a collective duty to ensure that all parties responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to book.”
Moreover, Gandhi alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had been briefed about Prajwal’s previous misconduct, including instances of sexual violence, as early as December 2023. Expressing dismay at the BJP’s alleged inaction despite being informed of these accusations, Gandhi condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s purported endorsement of Prajwal during electoral campaigning, accusing Modi of supporting a “mass rapist.”
During a political rally, Gandhi previously accused Prajwal of raping 400 women and filming the assaults. He criticized PM Modi for purportedly endorsing Prajwal during Karnataka’s elections. In response to these claims, Siddaramaiah had earlier urged PM Modi to revoke Prajwal’s diplomatic passport, assuring that the SIT would provide all necessary details and comply with legal procedures.
Prajwal was charged on April 28 in connection with an alleged sexual harassment case filed with the Holenarasipura Town police. The charges against Prajwal include sections 354A, 354D, 506, and 509 of the IPC, covering sexual harassment, intimidation, and outraging the dignity of a woman. The victim accused both.
