NEW DELHI: AAP leader and former minister Satyendar Kumar Jain is trailing against BJP candidate Karnail Singh in the Shakur Basti constituency, as per early trends. Jain, who has represented the seat since 2013, previously served as a key minister in the Arvind Kejriwal cabinet from 2015 to 2023. Before joining politics through Anna Hazare’s Lokpal movement, he worked at the Central Public Works Department and later established his own architectural consultancy firm. However, his political career faced a setback when he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on May 31, 2022, on money laundering charges.
Jain, a vocal advocate of AAP’s welfare-driven governance, had defended free healthcare, education, and utilities as essential for national progress. He argued that developed nations like Sweden and France follow similar models. Taking a dig at the BJP’s candidate, he alleged that Karnail Singh was an outsider, calling him a “migratory bird from America.” The AAP, which secured a massive mandate in the past two elections with 67 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020, faces a tough challenge this time, with exit polls predicting a BJP victory in Delhi.
