This agreement will provide a framework for increased cooperation and training between the two nations, focusing on the use of cyber threat intelligence and digital forensics in criminal investigations.
The MoU was officially signed in Washington on Friday by India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra, and Kristie Canegallo, the acting deputy secretary of the United States Homeland Security Investigations. The External Affairs Ministry of India confirmed the signing of the MoU and highlighted its significance in addressing the growing concerns over cybercrime and its complex links to various security challenges.
According to a statement from the ministry, the MoU will facilitate the respective agencies in both countries to bolster their cooperation on cybercrime investigations. It is expected to support joint efforts in sharing cyber threat intelligence, promoting digital forensics techniques, and enhancing the overall capacity of law enforcement agencies to address digital criminal activities.
On the Indian side, the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), which operates under the Union Home Ministry, will oversee the implementation of the MoU. On the US side, the Department of Homeland Security, along with its constituent agencies, including the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Homeland Security Investigations Cyber Crimes Center (C3), will play a key role in this partnership.
The ministry emphasized that cybercrimes often have intricate linkages with a range of common security challenges faced by both India and the US. These challenges include terrorism, violent extremism, terror financing, drug trafficking, human trafficking, money laundering, organized crime, illegal migration, and threats to transportation security. By fostering greater collaboration between the two countries, the MoU aims to address these critical issues more effectively.
