Nizamabad (Telangana), January14, 2025: Union Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal virtually inaugurated the office of the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad on Tuesday. The initiative is aimed at driving the development and export of turmeric, widely known as the ‘Golden Spice.’

During the launch, Goyal emphasized the importance of inaugurating the National Turmeric Board on such a propitious day, as celebrations take place across the nation. He outlined that the Board would include representatives from various Ministries, exporters, and producers’ associations to ensure a comprehensive approach to turmeric’s development.

Turmeric, a vital crop for farmers in 20 states such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Meghalaya, plays an essential role in India’s agricultural landscape. Goyal pointed out the vast potential for expanding turmeric production, especially in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and expressed confidence that the Board’s creation would significantly enhance the income of turmeric farmers across India.

The newly established Board will focus on research, innovation in turmeric products, and value addition to boost exports. It will also promote awareness about turmeric’s medicinal benefits, explore methods to increase crop yields, and strengthen logistics and supply chains to expand trade into new international markets.

Furthermore, Goyal emphasized that the Board would enforce quality and safety standards for both turmeric production and exports. In the 2023-24 period, turmeric cultivation in India spanned 3.05 lakh hectares, yielding 10.74 lakh tonnes. India remains a dominant player, accounting for over 7 percent of global turmeric production with 30 varieties cultivated across the country.

The Board’s membership includes representatives from the Ministry of AYUSH, the Department of Pharmaceuticals, the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and the Department of Commerce. States like Maharashtra, Telangana, and Meghalaya, known for their unique varieties such as Lakadong turmeric, will also play vital roles.

The National Turmeric Board aims to spearhead initiatives that will support turmeric farmers, promote trade, and collaborate with various government departments and agencies. By tapping into the growing global demand for turmeric and its wellness properties, the Board hopes to position India as the world leader in turmeric production and trade.

In 2023-24, India exported 1.62 lakh tonnes of turmeric and turmeric products worth USD 226.5 million, making up 62 percent of global turmeric trade.
