Shimla July 13 2024 : Congress candidate Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has secured a victory in the Dehra assembly bypoll. Thakur defeated Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Hoshyar Singh by a margin of 9,399 votes. According to the Election Commission’s website, Kamlesh Thakur received 32,737 votes, while the BJP nominee garnered 23,338 votes.

In other developments, Congress candidate Hardeep Singh Bawa was leading in the Nalagarh assembly constituency by 6,870 votes against BJP’s K.L Thakur in the penultimate round of counting. The BJP’s only lead was seen in Hamirpur, where its candidate held a narrow margin of 1,571 votes in the final round of counting.

The Nalagarh assembly constituency recorded the highest voter turnout at 79.04 percent, followed by Hamirpur at 67.72 percent and Dehra at 65.42 percent. The BJP then fielded all three former MLAs in their respective constituencies.

Overall, in the recent bypolls held across 13 assembly seats in seven states, Congress is leading in five constituencies.
