Kathmandu, July 12 2024 : Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ lost the vote of confidence in Parliament on Friday, following the withdrawal of support by the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML). This move comes just ten days after the CPN-UML vowed to lead the government itself.
In the 275-member House of Representatives, only 63 members supported Prachanda’s motion, while an overwhelming 194 opposed it, and one abstained. This marks the end of Prachanda’s third tenure, which began in December 2022 and has been characterized by frequent changes of coalition partners. Although Prachanda survived the last four votes of confidence, he was not as fortunate this time.
CPN-UML chairman K P Sharma Oli, backed by the Nepali Congress, is set to become the new Prime Minister. Shortly after Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire announced Prachanda’s defeat, members were seen congratulating Oli.
Oli and Nepali Congress chief Sher Bahadur Deuba are expected to meet President Ram Chandra Poudel jointly, with signatures from MPs of both parties, to stake a claim for Oli’s appointment as the new PM. Together, the two parties command the support of 167 members in the House.
The new government will be required to win the vote of confidence in Parliament within 30 days of its formation.
