Kolkata: A Kolkata-based doctor has landed in controversy after announcing a ₹500 discount on consultation fees for patients who say “Jai Shri Ram,” a move that has drawn criticism from the medical fraternity over ethical concerns.
Dr PK Hazra, an interventional cardiologist, shared the offer on social media, stating that patients who use the phrase during consultation would receive a reduced fee. The announcement, accompanied by a QR code and visuals featuring political symbolism, quickly went viral and triggered mixed reactions online.
Explaining his decision, Hazra said the initiative was meant to reduce the financial burden on patients while also reflecting his personal political leanings. He stated that his clinic’s consultation fee had already been lowered from ₹2,000 to ₹1,500 and that the additional discount was introduced as part of what he described as a “service-driven effort.”
He further indicated that he intends to enter electoral politics and expressed support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying the move was also aimed at building public engagement ahead of elections.
However, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), West Bengal chapter, has raised objections, calling the offer a violation of professional ethics. The body has reportedly sought an explanation from the doctor, arguing that medical services should remain neutral and not be influenced by political or religious expressions.
In its response, the association emphasised that while individuals are free to hold political views, linking healthcare benefits to slogans or affiliations undermines the principles of equal and unbiased treatment of patients.
Amid the backlash, Hazra maintained that the discount was not intended to exclude any group and claimed that his primary goal was to make healthcare more affordable. He also stated that patients presenting the offer could avail consultation at an even lower rate.
The controversy has reignited debate over the boundaries between personal beliefs and professional conduct in the healthcare sector.
