U.S: A student at Florida International University (FIU), identified as Gabriela Saldana, has been taken into custody following allegations that she posted messages in a private group chat that were later interpreted by authorities as threatening in nature.
According to reports, the 23-year-old was part of a large WhatsApp group involving fellow capstone students when she sent messages referencing a campus event scheduled at FIU’s Ocean Bank Convocation Center. Law enforcement officials reviewed the content after other students raised concerns, prompting an investigation.
Authorities allege that the messages included language suggesting a potential explosive threat tied to the event, which led police to treat the communication as a serious security concern. Investigators also stated that certain wording used in the chat was interpreted as coded language, escalating the seriousness of the case.
Campus police later located Saldana near the university premises, where she was detained. She reportedly acknowledged sending the messages during questioning. Following her arrest, she was transferred to a local correctional facility.
Reports indicate that the student was charged with a second-degree felony related to written threats to cause harm. During initial court proceedings, bail was set at $5,000.
Authorities further stated that the messages were sent during discussions about an academic event involving a large student group. The posts quickly drew attention from peers, leading to formal reporting and a security response.
