In a major move towards sustainable urban transport, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has rolled out Delhi’s first hydrogen-powered shuttle bus service in the Central Vista region. The green mobility initiative officially began operations on May 15 in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The newly introduced buses, supplied by Indian Oil Corporation Limited, are designed to support clean energy transportation and reduce carbon emissions in the national capital. Officials believe the project could become a model for future hydrogen-based public transport systems across India.
The shuttle buses will operate between Central Secretariat and Seva Tirtha Metro stations, helping commuters travel conveniently across important government and public locations in the Central Vista zone. The route includes major landmarks such as Kartavya Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Akbar Road, Baroda House, National Stadium, National Gallery of Modern Art and India Gate.
According to DMRC, the buses will run on weekdays from Monday to Friday, excluding gazetted holidays. Morning operations will take place from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, while evening services will be available from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM.
To ensure passenger safety and operational efficiency, the hydrogen buses have been equipped with GPS tracking systems and CCTV surveillance. The service frequency has been fixed at one bus every 30 minutes. One shuttle will move in a clockwise direction, while the second bus will cover the counterclockwise route.
DMRC will manage ticketing, passenger assistance and overall operations, while Indian Oil will handle drivers and hydrogen fuel infrastructure. Commuters can pay fares through the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), UPI or cash.
Ticket prices have been kept affordable with stage-based fares of Rs 10 and Rs 15.
The launch of hydrogen-powered buses highlights the Indian government’s growing focus on clean energy adoption and environmentally friendly transportation systems. Experts say this initiative could significantly reduce dependence on private vehicles and contribute to cleaner air in Delhi.
As India continues investing in green mobility, the hydrogen bus project is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of sustainable public transport in urban cities.
