CBI Plea Against Rhea Chakraborty in Sushant Singh Rajput’s Death Rejected by Supreme Court: ‘Frivolous’

Mumbai : In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court has provided relief to actress Rhea Chakraborty by dismissing a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the state of Maharashtra, and the Bureau of Immigration. This petition challenged the Bombay High Court’s earlier ruling that quashed the look-out circulars (LOCs) issued against Rhea Chakraborty, her father, Lt. Col. Indrajit Chakraborty (retd), and her brother Showik Chakraborty. These LOCs were related to the investigation into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

The Supreme Court’s bench, comprising Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan, characterized the petition as “frivolous,” highlighting that it was filed primarily because the accused were high-profile individuals rather than due to any substantive legal grounds. The bench emphasized the importance of respecting the High Court’s judgment, which found that the LOCs were unjustified and overly broad.

The Bombay High Court had previously ruled that the LOCs could lead to unwarranted restrictions on the personal freedoms of the Chakraborty family, pointing out that the CBI and the Maharashtra government had not provided sufficient grounds for their issuance. This decision marks a notable moment in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Sushant Singh Rajput’s tragic death, which has attracted widespread media attention and public scrutiny.

The dismissal of the petition is a key victory for Rhea Chakraborty and her family, allowing them to travel freely without the threat of being detained at airports or other points of entry into India. Rhea has maintained her innocence throughout the investigation and has repeatedly called for a fair and impartial inquiry.

This ruling also underscores the judiciary’s role in ensuring that legal actions, especially those involving prominent figures, adhere to established legal standards and do not infringe upon individual rights. The Supreme Court’s decision sends a clear message regarding the need for accountability and rational basis in law enforcement actions, particularly in cases that have become intertwined with public sentiment and media narratives.

With this development, the focus may shift back to the ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, as various agencies continue to explore the multiple dimensions of this complex case.
