DST Backs Indigenous Soya Protein Project to Boost Plant-Based Food Manufacturing
TDB extends financial support to Indore-based Sonic Biochem for commercial production of functional and textured soya protein concentrates using indigenous technology
New Delhi, July 30, 2026 : The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has extended financial assistance to Indore-based Sonic Biochem Extractions Pvt. Ltd. for the development and commercialization of indigenous Functional Soya Protein Concentrate (FSPC) and Textured Soya Protein Concentrate (TSPC).
The project will establish a modern manufacturing facility using the company’s indigenously developed technology, reducing dependence on imported Soya Protein Isolate while delivering comparable functional properties at lower production costs.
The initiative supports India’s push for self-reliance in value-added food processing and plant-based nutrition. It is expected to strengthen domestic manufacturing, promote agricultural value addition, reduce imports, and enhance export opportunities in the fast-growing global plant protein market.
TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak said the project would strengthen India’s food processing sector by promoting indigenous technologies, reducing import dependence, and creating globally competitive products under the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Sonic Biochem said the TDB support will help commercialize its technology at scale, strengthen India’s leadership in non-GMO soya protein ingredients, and meet the growing domestic and international demand for sustainable plant-based nutrition.
