Mumbai, June 10: In a major boost to India’s artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure ambitions, Reliance Industries Limited has announced a strategic agreement with Meta Platforms to develop a large-scale data centre facility in Gujarat‘s Jamnagar.
Under the partnership, Reliance will establish a dedicated 168-megawatt data centre designed specifically to support Meta’s growing global computing and AI requirements. The project is expected to be completed within the next two years and includes provisions for future expansion as demand increases.
The facility will mark Meta’s first custom-built data centre project in India, highlighting the country’s increasing importance in the global technology ecosystem and its emergence as a preferred destination for advanced AI infrastructure.
As part of the arrangement, Meta will lease capacity from the upcoming facility to strengthen its worldwide network of digital infrastructure. The collaboration further expands the long-standing relationship between the two companies, which have previously worked together across telecommunications, digital services and technology initiatives.
Reliance stated that it will oversee the entire lifecycle of the project, including design, construction, utility management, renewable energy integration, network connectivity and day-to-day operations. The company said this comprehensive approach will position it as a key provider of hyperscale data infrastructure solutions in India.
A major focus of the project will be sustainability. The data centre is planned to operate using renewable energy sources, while desalinated seawater will be utilized for cooling systems, reducing environmental impact and improving energy efficiency.
Commenting on the development, Mukesh Ambani described the partnership as a landmark step in strengthening India’s digital capabilities. He said the project demonstrates the country’s readiness to play a leading role in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape and will help establish Jamnagar as a global hub for advanced computing infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Mark Zuckerberg said the company is pleased to collaborate with Reliance on its first AI-focused data centre in India. He noted that the facility will support Meta’s global AI expansion plans while reinforcing its long-term commitment to investing in India’s digital economy.
Industry experts believe the project could significantly enhance India’s position in the global AI race by attracting further investments in cloud computing, data processing and next-generation digital technologies.
The announcement comes at a time when technology companies worldwide are rapidly expanding infrastructure to meet the increasing demand generated by artificial intelligence applications, machine learning workloads and data-intensive digital services.
