Amit Shah Calls for Massive Voter Participation as Bengal’s Crucial Final Polling Round Opens

BJP leader appeals to women, youth and all citizens to back development focused governance in decisive electoral battle

Kolkata, April 29, 2026: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday urged the people of West Bengal to cast their votes in unprecedented numbers as the second and concluding phase of the state Assembly elections commenced across 142 constituencies.

Addressing voters through a public appeal, Shah encouraged citizens, particularly women, young voters and families, to actively participate in shaping Bengal’s future. He stressed that every ballot would play an important role in restoring progress, ensuring security for women and pushing forward a stronger development agenda for the state.

The high stakes polling exercise spans a major portion of Bengal’s 294 Assembly seats and is being viewed as a decisive chapter in the intense political showdown. More than 3.2 crore eligible voters are participating in this round, with thousands of polling booths functioning under heightened security arrangements.

This phase features over 1,400 candidates, including a significant number of women contenders, making it one of the largest democratic exercises in the region. Election authorities have deployed extensive administrative and security mechanisms to ensure peaceful voting across key districts, including the politically sensitive Kolkata region.

Shah reiterated that strong public participation would be essential in determining a government committed to economic growth, public safety and opportunities for Bengal’s younger generation, while positioning the election as a defining moment for the vision of a prosperous Sonar Bangla.
