PM Modi Flags ‘Tense’ Global Situation, Calls for Lasting Peace During Austrian Leader’s Visit

India and Austria push for stronger ties as leaders discuss global conflicts, trade, and cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday underlined the need for enduring peace in a world facing multiple conflicts, saying the current global environment remains “serious and tense” and is affecting countries across the globe.

Speaking alongside Christian Stocker during his official visit to New Delhi, Modi said that ongoing crises, including those in Ukraine and West Asia, highlight the urgent need for peaceful and sustainable solutions.

He emphasised that conflicts cannot provide long-term answers and reiterated India’s position in favour of dialogue and stability.

The Prime Minister noted that both India and Austria share similar views on reforming international institutions to better respond to evolving global challenges. He also stressed the importance of collective efforts to counter terrorism.

Highlighting the importance of the visit, Modi described it as a milestone in bilateral relations, noting that it comes after several decades and marks the Austrian leader’s first official trip outside Europe.

He said the visit reflects a renewed commitment to strengthening ties between the two nations and could open new avenues for cooperation.

During the visit, India and Austria signed a Migration and Mobility Agreement aimed at facilitating workforce movement, particularly in sectors like healthcare.

Additionally, both sides announced a Working Holiday Programme designed to promote cultural exchange and provide opportunities for young people from both countries.

Modi also pointed to growing economic collaboration, stating that Austria’s technical expertise combined with India’s scale can help build resilient global supply chains.

He highlighted potential cooperation in sectors such as defence, semiconductors, quantum technology, and biotechnology.

The Prime Minister acknowledged Austria’s role in major infrastructure developments in India, citing projects like the Delhi Metro and Atal Tunnel, where Austrian engineering expertise has played a key role.

With trade, investment, and technology partnerships on the agenda, the visit is expected to inject fresh momentum into India-Austria relations.

As global uncertainties continue, both nations appear keen to deepen cooperation while advocating for stability and peace on the international stage.
