Accra: A tragic incident has rocked Ghanaian football after young player Dominic Frimpong lost his life in a violent attack on his team’s bus while returning from a league match.
Frimpong, who played as a winger for Berekum Chelsea, was travelling with teammates following a fixture in the Ghana Premier League when their vehicle was ambushed by armed assailants.
The attack reportedly took place along a highway stretch as the team was heading back from their away game. According to the club, a group of armed individuals obstructed the road and opened fire on the bus, forcing the driver to attempt an escape maneuver.
Amid the chaos, players and staff members abandoned the vehicle and sought safety in nearby areas to avoid the gunfire. Despite their efforts, Frimpong sustained fatal injuries during the incident.
The Ghana Football Association expressed deep grief over the loss, describing the 20-year-old as a talented and committed athlete whose future in the sport held great promise.
The governing body also indicated that it would review and enhance safety measures for teams travelling for domestic competitions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This is not the first time a football team in Ghana has faced such a threat. A previous attack on another club’s bus had raised concerns about player safety, although no casualties were reported in that case.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident further as calls grow for improved security on routes frequently used by teams during league travel.
