Tehran, March 9: Iran’s powerful clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, has chosen Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader, marking a major leadership transition in the Islamic Republic.
The decision was taken during a special meeting of the council responsible for selecting the nation’s highest religious and political authority. With this appointment, Mojtaba Khamenei becomes the third Supreme Leader in Iran’s history and succeeds his father, Ali Khamenei.
Members of the Assembly reportedly held deliberations before reaching a consensus on the new leadership, emphasizing the need for stability and unity at a time of heightened regional tensions.
Mojtaba Khamenei, a cleric who studied in the seminaries of Qom, has long been regarded as an influential figure within Iran’s conservative establishment. Over the years, he has maintained close connections with key political and security circles in the country.
His elevation to the top position comes at a critical moment for Iran, as the nation faces increasing geopolitical pressures and security challenges across the region.
Observers believe the leadership change could have significant implications for Iran’s domestic governance and foreign policy direction in the years ahead.
