Nagpur, March 1: A powerful explosion ripped through an explosives manufacturing facility in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district early Sunday morning, leaving at least 17 workers dead and 18 others injured, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred at a unit operated by SBL Energy Limited in Raulgaon village under Katol tehsil. According to preliminary information from authorities, the blast took place between 7:00 am and 7:15 am in the detonator packing section of the plant.
Senior police officials said the impact of the explosion was severe, resulting in multiple fatalities at the site itself. The injured workers were immediately transported to hospitals in Nagpur for urgent medical care. Some of the victims are reported to be in critical condition.
A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rushed to the factory premises to assist local authorities in search and rescue operations. Emergency personnel continued efforts to clear debris and ensure that no workers remained trapped inside the damaged structure.
Nagpur District Collector Vipin Itankar and Superintendent of Police Harrsh Podar reached the location soon after the incident to oversee relief measures and coordinate response efforts. Police have cordoned off the area while an investigation is being initiated to determine the cause of the explosion.
Company representatives stated that they are assessing the situation and will issue a detailed statement after gathering complete information. Officials indicated that safety protocols and compliance measures at the facility will be examined as part of the inquiry.
The tragedy in Nagpur follows closely on the heels of another fatal industrial explosion reported a day earlier at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh, raising fresh concerns over workplace safety standards in hazardous industries.
Authorities have assured that further details will be shared as the investigation progresses.
