The Ministry of Tourism has reinforced its commitment to sustainable and heritage tourism by implementing several strategic initiatives under the broad framework of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. Recognizing that the development and upkeep of cultural and natural heritage sites primarily rest with State Governments and Union Territory Administrations, the Ministry is playing a pivotal role in offering policy direction, financial support, and strategic vision.
A National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism has been formulated alongside the launch of the Travel for LiFE programme, aimed at encouraging both tourists and tourism businesses to embrace eco-friendly and responsible tourism practices.
To deepen this vision, the Ministry launched the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme to develop destinations that prioritize sustainability while centering the needs and experiences of tourists.
Additionally, the government is actively fostering heritage tourism through financial assistance provided under the Swadesh Darshan, PRASHAD (National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive), and Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure Development schemes.
These efforts aim to enhance infrastructure, preserve India’s cultural identity, and offer visitors an enriching, memorable, and sustainable tourism experience.
