Srinagar, Dec 11, 2023- The winter chill tightened its grip on Srinagar as temperatures plummeted to -4.8°C, marking the coldest night of the season on Monday. The Kashmir valley continued to experience an unyielding cold wave, with the minimum temperature in Srinagar dropping to -4.8°C, which was 4.2°C below the seasonal norm for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, according to the Meteorological Office.
The maximum temperature in Srinagar recorded at 0.6°C above the normal of 10.5°C on the previous day. Pahalgam witnessed a slight improvement in the minimum temperature at -4.7°C, compared to the -5.5°C recorded on Sunday, yet still remaining 2.6°C below the normal for this period. Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway reported a further drop in night temperature at -3.4°C, and Kokernag registered 2.4°C.
Gulmarg, the famed ski resort in north Kashmir, experienced a low of -3.6°C on Monday, slightly higher than the -4.2°C recorded on Sunday, but still within 0.1°C above normal. Kupwara witnessed a plunge in temperature at -4.0°C, indicating 2.2°C below the normal for the frontier north Kashmir district.
The Meteorological Office forecasts dry weather on Monday, generally cloudy conditions on December 12, and continued cloudiness from December 13 to 16. Overall, no significant weather activity is expected, and the region is likely to remain dry and cold until December 16. The MeT office anticipates a further drop in minimum temperatures during this period.
