Delhi Elections 2025: Polling Begins Across 70 Seats, Security Tightened

New Delhi : Voting is currently underway for the Delhi Assembly elections, marking a crucial electoral battle for the National Capital Territory. The polling began at 7 AM and will continue until 6 PM, allowing eligible voters ample time to cast their votes. Elections are being conducted across all 70 constituencies with stringent security measures in place to ensure a smooth and fair voting process. Over one crore fifty-six lakh eligible voters are expected to participate in this democratic exercise, deciding the fate of 699 candidates contesting in these elections.

Among the key candidates in the fray are Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, and Delhi Minister Gopal Rai. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded prominent leaders including Vijender Gupta, Pravesh Verma, Ramesh Bidhuri, and Kailash Gahlot. The Congress party has also put forth strong contenders such as Sandeep Dikshit, Haroon Yusuf, and Alka Lamba. The election outcome will be instrumental in determining the future political landscape of Delhi.

The Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements to ensure free, fair, and peaceful polling across the city. A total of 13,700 polling booths have been set up across the 70 assembly constituencies. To promote inclusivity and gender representation, 70 polling stations are being managed entirely by women, while another 70 are being overseen by divyangjans (persons with disabilities). Additionally, more than one lakh eighty thousand polling personnel have been deployed to facilitate the smooth conduct of the elections.

In a bid to enhance voter experience and accessibility, assured minimum facilities have been provided at all polling centres. These include ramps for the differently-abled, wheelchairs for those in need, medical teams for any health emergencies, and creche services for voters with young children. These measures aim to make the voting process more inclusive and comfortable for all sections of society.

Of the one crore fifty-six lakh eligible voters, over 83 lakh are male, approximately 72 lakh are female, and around 1,267 belong to the third gender category. Notably, 783 voters are aged above 100 years, highlighting the participation of senior citizens in the democratic process. Special provisions have been made for elderly and differently-abled voters, ensuring their seamless access to polling booths.

As voting progresses, authorities remain vigilant to prevent any electoral malpractices. Security forces, including paramilitary personnel and local police, are stationed at critical polling locations to maintain law and order. The Election Commission has also set up surveillance mechanisms, including webcasting and CCTV monitoring, to deter any unlawful activities.

The voter turnout in these elections will play a significant role in shaping Delhi’s governance for the next five years. With major political parties vying for power, the results, which are set to be announced on February 8, 2025, will be keenly watched by political analysts and the general public alike. The outcome will determine whether the AAP retains its stronghold, if the BJP can make significant inroads, or if the Congress can stage a comeback in the capital’s political arena.
