Maharashtra : Chief Minister Eknath Shinde praised the Pro-Govinda League for bringing the 100-year-old tradition of Govinda to a global audience. Speaking at the Pro-Govinda League prize distribution ceremony in Worli yesterday, he highlighted the league’s role in showcasing this historic sport on an international stage.
CM Shinde encouraged everyone to celebrate a safe Govinda festival, emphasizing the sport’s historical significance, which dates back to the pre-independence era. He noted that Govinda has now been recognized as an adventurous sport. To support participants, the government has provided insurance coverage for this year’s Govindas, with 75,000 individuals insured.
Additionally, Shinde announced that 60 Govindas will be sent to Spain this year, reflecting the sport’s growing global presence. The Pro-Govinda League saw participation from a total of 32 teams this year, with 16 teams demonstrating their skills during the ceremony. The event underscored the league’s success in promoting and preserving the tradition of Govinda while fostering international recognition.
