PM Modi Presents Banarasi Saree, Makhana & Maha Kumbh Holy Water to Mauritius President & His Wife

New Delhi, Mar 11, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a Banarasi silk saree in an intricately designed Sadeli box to Mauritius First Lady Vrinda Gokhool and gifted makhana, a traditional delicacy from Bihar, to Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool during their meeting at the State House in Port Louis.

The Banarasi saree, renowned for its exquisite silk and intricate zari craftsmanship, originates from Varanasi, while the Sadeli box, crafted in Gujarat, showcases remarkable inlay work.

In a special gesture, PM Modi also presented a Brass and Copper Pot containing sacred water from the Sangam at the Maha Kumbh to President Gokhool, along with an idol of Lord Ganesha.

During their discussion, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the unique and historic ties between India and Mauritius. “The shared cultural and historical connections between the two nations continue to foster strong people-to-people relationships,” a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted.

PM Modi expressed his deep honor at attending Mauritius’ National Day celebrations as the Chief Guest for the second time. He also personally handed over Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards to President Gokhool and First Lady Vrinda Gokhool, symbolizing the deep-rooted bond between the two nations.

Highlighting India’s commitment to traditional medicine, PM Modi visited the Ayurveda Garden at the State House, an initiative developed in collaboration with the Government of India. He emphasized that Mauritius remains a crucial partner in advancing the benefits of Ayurveda and holistic healing practices.

Following their discussions, President Gokhool hosted a grand State luncheon in PM Modi’s honor. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister praised the rich flavors of the “Mauritius Thali,” describing it as a reflection of the island nation’s diverse and composite culture. He noted that the cuisine, much like the Indo-Mauritian friendship, embodies a beautiful blend of traditions and shared history.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), MEA Spokesperson shared:
“At the State House, PM @narendramodi received a warm welcome from President Dharambeer Gokhool of Mauritius. The leaders discussed enhancing bilateral ties, deeply rooted in shared history, cultural heritage & strong people-to-people connections. PM also visited the Ayurvedic Garden, a testament to India-Mauritius collaboration in traditional medicine.”

Reiterating India’s unwavering commitment to its partnership with Mauritius, PM Modi thanked President Gokhool and First Lady Vrinda Gokhool for their hospitality, emphasizing that the ties between the two nations will continue to grow stronger.
