NIA Team to Visit US to Secure Extradition of Tahawwur Rana in 26/11 Mumbai Attack

New Delhi : In a major development in the pursuit of justice for the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, the US Supreme Court has rejected a final petition filed by Tahawwur Rana, who was seeking to block his extradition to India. This decision dismisses his last legal challenge against being brought back to India in connection with the deadly attacks that claimed 166 lives. Following this ruling, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is preparing to send a team to the United States to finalize the formalities for Rana’s extradition.

Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian national, is wanted by Indian authorities for his involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. He has been accused of providing logistical support and coordinating activities with terror mastermind David Headley, who was a key operative of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the terrorist group responsible for the attack. Despite his arrest in 2009, his extradition to India has faced numerous legal hurdles. With the US Supreme Court’s recent ruling, Rana’s extradition appears imminent, marking a significant step toward bringing him to trial in India for his role in the horrific attack.

Sources have confirmed to news agency ANI that a team from the NIA, consisting of senior officers with the ranks of Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General, is expected to travel to the United States in the coming weeks. This move is in line with the formal procedures required to ensure Rana’s transfer to Indian custody. The NIA team will coordinate with the relevant US authorities to complete the necessary legal and administrative processes.

The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) have already been informed of this development, and the agencies are closely working together to expedite the process. The NIA’s visit to the US will be critical in securing Rana’s return to India, where he will face trial for his alleged involvement in one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in the country’s history.

The 26/11 attacks in Mumbai, which targeted key locations such as the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel, and CST Railway Station, left an indelible mark on India’s fight against terrorism. With Rana’s extradition, Indian authorities hope to close another chapter in the quest for justice, as they continue to seek accountability for the perpetrators of the massacre.
