Congress Slams BJP: Calls ‘Double Engine’ Governments a Curse for Daughters

New Delhi, Mar 4,2025: The Congress on Tuesday accused the BJP-led ‘double engine’ governments of failing to ensure women’s safety, claiming that crimes against women have risen sharply while concrete action remains elusive.

Addressing a press conference, All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that his promises to protect daughters have proven to be hollow, casting doubt on the government’s commitment to women’s security.

“BJP’s ‘double engine’ rule is turning into a nightmare for daughters. Be it Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, or Rajasthan, numerous horrific crimes have been reported against women, yet the police remain passive spectators,” she alleged.

She cited a recent molestation case in Maharashtra involving the daughter of a Union Minister and her friends, where the accused was later identified as a former BJP councilor. Lamba added that he has been seen in photographs alongside Maharashtra’s Chief Minister and other senior BJP leaders. “If even a Union Minister struggles for justice, imagine the plight of ordinary citizens. He may have to step down and join the battle for his daughter’s justice,” she remarked.

With International Women’s Day approaching on March 8, Lamba questioned whether there is any real commitment to women’s safety. She highlighted the case of a 19-year-old girl gang-raped at knifepoint in Pune, where the perpetrators even filmed the act, yet no strict action was taken.

She also mentioned Gujarat, where over 17,000 crimes against women were reported in nine years, with nearly 200 girls seeking police help monthly. In one case, a BJP MLA was booked for allegedly raping a Dalit woman, but the police’s handling of the case raised concerns.

“In Delhi, 101 incidents of brutality against women were reported in a month, with three rapes occurring daily. Yet, the government remains silent,” she said.

Lamba asserted that the Congress and Mahila Congress stand firmly with victims and will continue to hold the government accountable for its failures in ensuring women’s safety.
