Delhi Polls: Congress Pledges ₹500 Gas Cylinders and Free Power Up to 300 Units

Congress Announces ‘Mehngai Mukt Yojana’ Ahead of Delhi Assembly Polls

New Delhi, January 16,2025: In the lead-up to the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, the Congress party unveiled its ambitious ‘Mehngai Mukt Yojana’ on Thursday, promising relief from rising costs with a slew of welfare measures. The party pledged subsidized gas cylinders for ₹500, free electricity up to 300 units, and the provision of free ration kits for households.

At a press conference organized by the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC), Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, alongside Delhi Congress Chief Devendra Yadav, elaborated on the promises. Revanth Reddy highlighted the success of similar initiatives in Telangana, emphasizing, “In Telangana, we waived off the debts of over 25 lakh farmers, totaling ₹21,000 crore, within the first year of our government. We have also provided over 55,000 government jobs and offered women free public transport, ₹500 gas cylinders, and 200 units of free electricity.”

Urging the citizens of Delhi to back Congress, Reddy assured, “What we accomplished in Telangana, we will replicate in Delhi. Congress has always delivered on its promises.”

Recalling the legacy of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Reddy praised her leadership, stating, “Delhi saw unprecedented development during Sheila ji’s tenure. Unfortunately, both Modi and Kejriwal have failed to deliver on their promises, misleading the people time and again. The people of Delhi have given them multiple chances, but they have fallen short.”

Delhi Congress Chief Devendra Yadav outlined the party’s strategy, reflecting on the insights gathered during the month-long ‘Delhi Yatra.’ He explained, “Inspired by Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, we toured Delhi, interacting with citizens and understanding their concerns. Based on these interactions, we have formulated five guarantees for Delhi.”

Yadav pledged that these promises would be approved in the party’s first cabinet meeting if elected. The key highlights of the free ration kit scheme were also revealed, including provisions of 5 kg rice, 2 kg sugar, 1 liter edible oil, 6 kg pulses, and 250 grams tea per family.

Earlier, Congress had introduced other schemes such as ‘Pyari Didi,’ focusing on women’s welfare, ‘Jeevan Rakshak’ for healthcare, and ‘Yuva Udaan’ to empower the youth.

The election for Delhi’s 70-member assembly is scheduled for February 5, with the results to be declared on February 8. Congress is hoping to make a strong comeback by addressing the pressing issues of inflation, unemployment, and social welfare.

The party’s promises of relief from high costs aim to resonate with voters seeking an alternative to the current administration, positioning Congress as a credible choice for the future of Delhi.
