Amit Shah Calls for BPR&D Research to Address Grassroots Policing Challenges

New Delhi, January10, 2025: Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a review meeting at the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D) in New Delhi on Thursday, where he emphasized the need for the agency to carry out research to identify challenges in grassroots policing and develop effective solutions.

Shah highlighted that BPR&D is committed to transforming Indian police forces into ‘SMART’ forces, enabling them to tackle the challenges of policing and internal security. He stressed the importance of equipping police personnel with the right intellectual, physical, and organizational resources.

During the meeting, the Home Minister suggested that the Modus Operandi Bureau, along with BPR&D, NCRB, prison officials, and forensic experts, should collaboratively analyze the methods behind crimes. He also directed BPR&D to focus on addressing challenges faced at the grassroots level of policing.

Shah underscored the significance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, calling for partnerships with renowned international institutions in research studies and projects. He instructed the Bureau to expand the scope and outreach of its projects and publications, which would benefit police forces and enhance the public image of law enforcement.

The Home Minister commended BPR&D’s efforts in modernizing police forces through training initiatives, upgrading police and prison processes, and addressing new-age challenges. He also emphasized the Bureau’s role as the key agency linking the Ministry with states and Union Territories, urging for better streamlining to meet the specific needs of the criminal justice system.

Shah further stressed the importance of adopting a ‘Make in India’ approach to meet policing requirements and encouraged greater involvement from stakeholders in the criminal justice system, states, UTs, and the Ministry to identify and solve problems efficiently. He assured full support to BPR&D for its continued smooth operations.

The meeting was attended by Union Home Secretary, the Director General of BPR&D, senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, and BPR&D officers.
