Mira Road Knife Attack: Probe Points to Self-Radicalisation, Says Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai: A knife attack in Mira Road that left two security guards injured is being investigated as a possible case of self-radicalisation, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday, citing early findings from the ongoing probe.

According to officials, material recovered from the accused’s residence has raised concerns about extremist influence. Preliminary inputs suggest the suspect may have developed targeted hostility, prompting investigators to examine whether ideological motivations played a role in the assault.

The 31-year-old accused, identified as Jaib Ansari, was taken into custody within hours of the early morning attack. He had reportedly spent several years in the United States before returning to India in 2019.

The incident occurred around 4 am at a residential construction site in the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road East. Police said the accused allegedly attacked two guards—Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen—following a confrontation that escalated into violence. Both victims sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Given the sensitive nature of the case and claims circulating about a possible religious angle, the investigation was transferred to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Officials from multiple agencies, including central authorities, are now working together to determine whether the accused acted alone or had any external support.

“The inquiry will not be restricted to the individual alone. We are examining all possible links, including factors that may have contributed to his radicalisation,” the Chief Minister stated, adding that a comprehensive investigation is underway to rule out any broader conspiracy.

Authorities also moved swiftly to contain tensions in the area after the incident triggered concern among residents. Police presence was increased, and officials appealed to the public to avoid spreading unverified information.

Investigators are currently analysing CCTV footage, digital records, and the accused’s background as part of efforts to establish a clear motive behind the attack.
