Guwahati, May 10, 2026: Himanta Biswa Sarma has been unanimously selected as the leader of the NDA legislature party in Assam, paving the way for his continuation as Chief Minister after a decisive mandate in the state assembly elections.
The decision was taken during a meeting of newly elected MLAs from the Bharatiya Janata Party along with its allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front, held at the party headquarters in Guwahati. Senior party leaders, including central observers, were present during the proceedings.
All 82 BJP legislators formally supported Sarma’s leadership, with multiple senior MLAs proposing and seconding his name. Following this, representatives from AGP and BPF also endorsed his candidature in separate meetings, confirming full alliance backing.
The ruling alliance secured a strong majority in the 126 member Assembly, with BJP winning 82 seats while AGP and BPF contributed 10 seats each, taking the coalition’s total strength to 102 MLAs.
Party leaders credited the election outcome to organizational coordination and leadership efforts over the past term. Sarma, addressing the development, expressed gratitude to the central leadership and alliance partners while reaffirming commitment to the state’s progress and governance priorities.
With the leadership decision finalized, Sarma is expected to meet the Governor to formally stake claim for government formation. The swearing in ceremony is scheduled to be held in Guwahati on May 12, with participation expected from national leaders, chief ministers, and other dignitaries.
The event is likely to draw a large gathering, marking the beginning of another term for the NDA government in Assam under Sarma’s leadership.
