The dead toll from two landslides in southern Ethiopia has grown to 229, with more expected as search efforts continue. The landslides occurred after heavy rain, with the first slamming the Geze Gofa area on Sunday night and the second burying rescue workers on Monday morning. The victims include 148 men and 81 women. The number of fatalities increased when rescuers became stranded. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed his heartfelt sadness over the tragedy. Landslides like this are common in Ethiopia during the rainy season.
