Delhi Faces Severe Weather as IMD Issues Red Warning for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

New Delhi, August 24, 2026; Delhi witnessed intense rainfall and thunderstorms on Monday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red warning across the national capital, cautioning residents about heavy rain, lightning and strong winds.

The weather alert was initially issued for select parts of Delhi, but the latest district-wise warning expanded the red-alert coverage to all areas of the capital. The IMD forecast rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour in areas likely to experience the strongest spells.

East Delhi was among the areas highlighted in the earlier warning, with the weather department also predicting thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph. Several neighbouring parts of the Delhi-NCR region were placed under an orange warning amid deteriorating weather conditions.

The alert comes as a spell of intense monsoon activity affects the national capital, with residents advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary outdoor movement, particularly in areas experiencing heavy downpours.

The IMD’s latest assessment indicates that adverse weather conditions may continue through the afternoon, raising concerns over waterlogging, traffic disruptions and reduced visibility on major roads.

Authorities and commuters are keeping a close watch on the situation as rainfall intensifies across Delhi and adjoining NCR districts, including Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad.
