Delhi Assembly Witnesses Stormy Scenes as BJP, AAP Members Clash Over House Proceedings

New Delhi, August 7: Delhi Assembly clash marked Friday’s proceedings after BJP and AAP legislators engaged in a heated verbal exchange inside the House. The confrontation prompted Speaker Vijendra Gupta to intervene and caution members against disrupting the Assembly.

The heated exchange occurred when AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar and BJP MLA Ravi Negi confronted each other during the session. Both legislators stood up from their seats and engaged in an argument, prompting immediate intervention from Speaker Vijendra Gupta.

Calling the incident regrettable, the Speaker urged members to maintain parliamentary decorum and cautioned that disciplinary measures could be taken if such confrontations were repeated.

The session also saw a political face-off over the functioning of the Assembly, particularly on the issue of Question Hour. AAP members questioned its conduct, while the ruling BJP defended its legislative record.

Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra accused the previous AAP government of not conducting Question Hour regularly during its tenure. He also criticised Leader of Opposition Atishi for not attending the day’s proceedings, alleging that her absence reflected a lack of seriousness towards Assembly business.

Minister Parvesh Verma echoed similar criticism, claiming the Opposition leadership had shown little interest in participating in the ongoing Monsoon Session.

Amid the political exchanges, Speaker Vijendra Gupta announced a technological upgrade for the Assembly, stating that its live proceedings are now supported by an Artificial Intelligence-enabled system capable of real-time transcription and multilingual interpretation, aimed at improving accessibility and transparency.

The House also took up several public interest issues.

AAP MLA Aaley Mohammad Iqbal highlighted concerns over the condition of Delhi’s government healthcare facilities. He claimed that patients at LNJP Hospital faced long delays in securing ventilator beds and alleged shortages of critical medical equipment. He also expressed concern over lengthy waiting periods for diagnostic tests such as MRI and CT scans, urging the government to increase ICU capacity and strengthen healthcare infrastructure.

Another AAP legislator, Jarnail Singh, raised the issue of food adulteration, calling for stronger enforcement against the sale of contaminated food products. He urged the government to establish district-level inspection teams, intensify food sampling, and investigate food quality in private school canteens to safeguard public health.

The Assembly proceedings reflected both political disagreements and discussions on governance issues, with healthcare services, food safety and legislative practices emerging as key topics of debate during the session.
